Noemi Ponce's Example

8 Places-4.jpg

In this photograph, Noemi chose to capture her grandmother in her kitchen, a sacred space in the home of any grandmother.

Much like Mr. Tsuda's photograph, it is compositionally intriguing and gives the audience an insight into her grandmother's personality and priorities. Your eyes are immediately drawn to her grandmother herself, who is wearing an apron as if she's about to cook. The multiple pots that can be seen around the kitchen are a sign of years of perfecting recipes.

A small detail that is a staple in many Mexican-American homes is the fruit magnets on the fridge. The multiple plants that line the window sill, the lacey curtains, and the patterned wallpaper by the stove all give information about Noemi's grandmother.

In relation to the work of Mr. Tsuda, Noemi photographed her grandmother in her environment, a place where she spends a lot of time cooking for her family. There is this comfort that develops as a result of familiarity which is parallel to the work of  Mr. Tsuda.
